FAQs
Who are your teachers and what types of classes do you offer?
This really depends on the year. Most of our teachers are moms of our students. We have some teachers who were homeschooling moms and have graduated all their kids, or who were teachers in a regular school in the past and now view their teaching at CCG as a ministry. Our classes vary from year to year, especially in the younger grades. We have offered all types of fun and interesting classes in the past--woodworking, art, cooking, public speaking, logic, gameschooling, interactive history, and so many more! Each year our moms and teachers decide what classes they would like to offer to our families. For our older grades, we do try to offer an option for core subjects, such as math, English, science, and social studies. But we never guarantee a particular class for a particular year. By the grace of God, we always seem to have a wonderful selection taught by a group of caring and committed teahers!
How does your schedule work?
We meet at a small church in Glen Allen in western Hanover County. Our school days are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:30am and 2pm. Elementary classes are only on Tuesdays, while middle and high school classes are scheduled for Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Most classes are once a week, but some of our upper level offerings, such as math, science, and foreign language, meet twice per week. There is no scheduled lunch hour. Families may enroll in as few or as many classes as they desire; each family determines their own schedule. When children are not in class, they are typically in the fellowship hall or out on the playground with friends. Our older students often utilize the teen room during their free time.
Our school year consists of 30 academic weeks, beginning in mid-September and ending in mid-May. We take a one week Thanksgiving break, a three week Christmas break, and a one week spring break in March. The 31st week of our calendar includes two optional events: field day held at a local park on Tuesday and a Science Fair and Exhibition Day at the church on Thursday.
What is required of parents at Cornerstone?
We are not a school and have no desire to be like a school. We are a group of families that come together to foster community, build relationships among children and adults, and support our homeschooling with academic and enrichment classes. Therefore, we are not a drop off facility. An adult is expected to be on campus with children, supervising them, at all times--we have moms, dads, grandmas, and sometimes grandpas! Parents volunteer on a regular basis, for an hour at a time, usually as a door monitor. When not volunteering, parents spend time in the fellowship hall, in the nursery or on the playground with children not in class, or walking the grounds with fellow moms. We desire to provide support and community to the whole family and not just be an academic place to leave your children.
How much does it cost to be a member of Cornerstone?
Our registration fee is $100 per family, which includes one student. Each additional child on campus (whether taking classes or a non-enrolled sibling) is an additional $15. The registration fee for current families is collected in March when we register and enroll for the following year. In September we also collect a $100 cleaning fee per family, which covers the cost of paying for the building to be cleaned once a week. Tuition and supply fees for individual classes vary and are decided by each teacher. A $50 deposit for each class is required at the time of enrollment, and that $50 is credited toward the total tuition due for the year. The CCG fees (registration and cleaning) do not change, but your total financial commitment will be based on the number classes of classes in which you enroll your child(ren). If your plans change and you withdraw from CCG, your registration fee is refundable before August 1st.
I'm not comfortable submitting an application without first visiting your community. Do you allow families to come and observe for a day?
We do not offer visits to prospective families throughout the year. There is a great deal of interest from potential families every year, and we do not have the space or the manpower to offer visits. Our rooms are small, and many classes are filled to capacity. Furthermore, we are run entirely by volunteers and just don't have the time throughout the day to be giving tours. However, if you decide to submit an application, the only sacrfice you are making is time. We do not deposit your registration check unless you are admitted into CCG and you have accepted membership. We begin accepting applications at our open house in March, and usually stop accepting them within just a few days due to the number received. We schedule family interviews for Tuesday and Thursday mornings in early April and at that time, your family will receive a tour of the building and get to see how we operate on a normal day. If, after the interview and tour, you decide that CCG is not the right fit for your family, we will shred your registration check, and you have no obligation to join our group.
Can I join CCG at any time?
Unfortunately, no. Historically, we are filled to capacity every year. We accept applications for new families in March and by the end of April have finalized our members and class enrollement for the following school year. Very rarely do we have the capacity to add students at other times of the year. If you are interested in joining CCG, we would strongly encourage you to submit an application at the open house. We consider applications in the order in which they are received.
